Choosing a Minor That Suits You and Your Education
What Factors Should be Considered in Choosing a Minor?
Choosing a minor that compliments your major is a key factor in enahcing your undergraduate degree. Several factors should be considered when choosing a minor including personal interest, career prospects, academic requirements, skill development, workload, relationship to your major and your overall goals.
Do I Need a Minor? Should I Have a Minor?
Most colleges, including ACM, do not require a minor to earn a bachelor's degree. It is an optional choice that may factor in to your education depending on some of the considerations listed above. It is a personal decision that utlimately depends on your goals. Sometimes focusing on your major and varying your courses may be more beneficial.
Why do a Minor Instead of a Second Major?
A double major offers its own set up advantages including more in-depth knowledge through additional coursework, more career opportunities or graduate school. Showing a depth of education and expertise in multiple areas may provide an advantage over choosing a minor.
A minor may be beneficial for other reasons such as balancing courseloads, maintaining graduation timelines, offering additional flexibility, or serving broader interests. A minor will enable you to take more varied coursework that is not in adherence to your major or minor.
